Commerce vs. Art

Is film commerce or art?  On one level, filmmakers have a responsibility to those that provide the monetary means for the creation, distribution and display of their work; in short, they must fill seats in a theater which has become increasingly more difficult today with the pressure of opening well during the first weekend and with the advent of home entertainment which is again a threat - something the size of a theater screen (i.e. widescreen format) cannot solve.  On another level, film is an art form - a statement of our times.  Film is successful when it serves both purposes.
